Classes Offered


Children’s Voice Class  – Each 70-minute class-time will consist of the following:

  • 20 minutes of full class together doing vocal exercises and singing as an ensemble
  • 25 minutes of individualized vocal lessons in a small group setting (half of class at a time)
  • 25 minutes of music theory instruction and games in small groups at level best suited to each student’s progress
  • Weekly homework will include learning song lyrics, completing fun theory worksheets and practicing sight-singing via a student subscription to a terrific online learning tool.  Expected practice time ranges from 10 to 30 minutes per day, depending on age level (grades 1-6)
  • The option of participation in MTAC’s Certificate of Merit program along with this class is available to students registering in Fall Session beginning in September.

Vocal Workshop for Teens  – Each 70-minute class-time will include the following:

  • Working on vocal technique in solo and group context in a fun, affirming environment
  • Sight-singing training using Solfege
  • Music Theory instruction to gain a firm grasp of music fundamentals
  • Emphasis for all facets of instruction is on individualized personal improvement
  • The option of participation in MTAC’s Certificate of Merit program along with this class is available to students registering in Fall Session beginning in September.

Songbird Choir for Girls – Open to girls in grades 7-12, by audition.

This auditioned ensemble is for the more advanced singers in terms of vocal technique as well as sight-reading experience.  The expectation is that members of this group will be at level 3 or higher in the Certificate of Merit curriculum or equivalent. Contact for more information.


Festival Chorus – Mixed Choir (SATB) open to adult singers.

This intergenerational community of singers enjoys meeting together to sing choral music of a variety of styles, including classical and sacred.For more information about choirs for adults and teens, please contact the director, Dianne Harmel at

Registration, Dates & Fees

Class size will be limited for Children’s Voice and Vocal Workshop for Teens to allow for adequate individual attention to voice technique and music theory skills.

To secure a place in Children’s Voice or Vocal Workshop for Teens, please pre-register by sending registration form and non-refundable $50 deposit (check payable to “FAVA”)  to FAVA, PO Box 766, Sierra Madre, CA 91025. The balance will be due on 10/1/2017.

Classes will be held in two 15-week semesters:

Fall: 9/24/16 – 1/21/18 (with 4-week holiday break)

Fees per 15-Week Semester (due first week of class):

Children’s Voice Class & Vocal Workshop for Teens : $325

Materials Fee for voice classes: $35

Advanced Treble Ensemble (Songbird Choir): $125 ($75 if enrolled in voice class)

FAVA Festival Chorus : suggested donation


Scholarships: Partial scholarships are available on a financial-need basis.  To apply for a scholarship, email and request a scholarship application.


September 24: Fall Semester Voice Classes begin; Songbird Choir audition call-backs

October 29: FAVA Goes Baroque! Celebration of Baroque era music.  7:00pm

December 10: FAVA Christmas Concert 7:00pm (Dec. 17, 24 & 31 – holiday break)

January 21: End of Fall Session Solo Recital Time TBD

January 28: Beginning of Spring Session.  New students are welcome to join!

March 11: SpringSing Musical Revue and Ice Cream Social event.  Fun times, fun music.

April 1 – No class on Easter Sunday

May 14 – FAVA Spring Concert 7:00pm
